The story of heroism is based on true events that unfolded a world away in the harrowing aftermath of 9/11 when a U.S. Special Forces team, led by their new Captain, Mitch Nelson (Chris Hemsworth), is chosen to be the first U.S. troops sent into Afghanistan for an extremely dangerous mission. There, in the rugged mountains, they must convince Northern Alliance General Dostum (Navid Negahban) to join forces with them to fight their common adversary: the Taliban and their Al Qaeda allies. In addition to overcoming mutual distrust and a vast cultural divide, the Americans—accustomed to state-of-the-art warfare—must adopt the rudimentary tactics of the Afghani horse soldiers. But despite their uneasy bond, the new allies face overwhelming odds: outnumbered and outgunned by a ruthless enemy that does not take prisoners.

In all my years as a Reviewer, I have never seen as strong a reaction to a single franchise. There have been countless theories and endless speculation over Star Wars: The Last Jedi in two short years. It will all be put to the test in four more days.

For example, many fans are very eager to discover the parentage of Rey. Is she a Solo, a Skywalker, a Palatine, or a Kenobi. Perhaps, she is a complete stranger to the friends and family of the Skywalker bloodline.

My questions regarding Rey's parentage:
How important is it to the integrity of the story?
Does it affect her power?
Will it affect her fate?

Rey is a woman on a personal journey. Not only does she want answers about her origin, but more importantly, where she is going. Daisy Ridley admits that Rey is on a personal journey. She seeks answers about her purpose in life. She wants family, belonging, and love after a lifetime of mere survival.

The Last Jedi is bound to be a roller coaster for her. According to trailers and interviews, Luke is promising to be a reluctant, difficult teacher. He is certainly not eager to give her the emotional belonging she craves. It is not the kind of dynamic one would expect in a father and daughter or an uncle and niece. The only dynamic Luke may give Rey is that of a frustrating teacher (assuming he agrees to teach her at all).

Star Wars fans all over the world rejoiced today when the first trailer for The Last Jedi finally premiered.

By Cara Buckley 28 Nov, 2017

An exciting new video for Star Wars: The Last Jedi  has premiered!

It reveals very little about the mysteries of the story including Rey's parentage, Luke's mission, or the fate of the Jedi order. We will simply have to wait five months until the film premieres.

Here is what they do reveal:

  • Rey begins her training.
  • Leia continues her work as a diplomat and resistance leader.
  • Enough time passes for Finn and Kylo Ren's wounds to heal.
  • Kylo Ren continues his work with the First Order and Supreme Leader Snoke.
  • Finn joins the resistance cause.
  • Poe is promoted.
  • There is a promise of a grand twist (acc. to John Boyega)
  • It keeps the classic story of good vs. evil (acc. to Gwendoline Christie)
  • There is a strong family dynamic (acc. to the dearly departed Carrie Fisher).

The known remaining members of the Skywalker family are Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, and Ben Solo/Kylo Ren. Each of them separates and follows their own paths. Whether or not they reunite remains to be seen. Whether or not Rey is a biological member of this family also remains to be seen.

However, that shouldn't suggest that Rey cannot find family with Luke and Leia. She begins her journey as a lost and lonely woman desperately waiting for her family to return to her. She may find a place with Luke just as she finds a father figure in Han Solo. She may also replace Kylo Ren as a Luke's pupil. She has the potential to redeem Luke after losing his academy.

There are still so many exciting possibilities for Star Wars: The Last Jedi . I await its premiere with eager anticipation. It will serve as a remarkable story rich with lessons with second chances, redemption, reconciliation, and good vs. evil.

What would it look like if a higher power determines our plans? Determines our fears and anxieties? Controls our every move?

What if an attempt to change our own path is cause for righteous anger in stead of the gift that it is?

What if our choices are restricted to only two options: the life of a puppet or death?

What would a life void of free will look like?

SYNOPSIS:
When Brad Sloan (Ben Stiller) accompanies his college bound son to the East Coast, the visit triggers a crisis of confidence in Brad’s Status, writer and director Mike White’s bittersweet comedy. Brad has a satisfying career and a comfortable life in suburban Sacramento where he lives with his sweet-natured wife, Melanie (Jenna Fischer), and their musical prodigy son, Troy (Austin Abrams), but it’s not quite what he imagined during his college glory days. Showing Troy around Boston, where Brad went to university, he can’t help comparing his life with those of his four best college friends: a Hollywood bigshot (White), a hedge fund founder (Luke Wilson), a tech entrepreneur (Jemaine Clement), and a political pundit and bestselling author (Michael Sheen). As he imagines their wealthy, glamorous lives, he wonders if this is all he will ever amount to. But when circumstances force him to reconnect with his former friends, Brad begins to question whether he has really failed or is, in some ways at least, the most successful of them all.

REVIEW
It has been called an alternate version of the Jason Bourne flicks where the Treadstone assassination program are the good guys. All the fundamental life questions are at play: Who am I? What is my purpose? Where am I going? The value of such films as this is they help us in answering those questions in our own lives. Aside from all this, it’s a very good action film.

Welcome to the Loser's Club.

IT  is a brilliant, masterful telling of Steven King's infamous novel. This film, both hysterical and terrifying, introduces each member of the Loser's Club as young teenagers. Each of them is the victims of bullying. Each of them is lonely and troubled. Each of them has a paralyzing fear.

As individuals, they are vulnerable to the worst kind of evil, a monster that feeds on children. They come together because of their mutual circumstances, which give them empathy for each other. As a unit, they are strong enough to stand up to their bullies, to their fears, and to the monster that preys on them.

Throughout their journey, each of them finds the strength to fight their personal fears, including the monster. They have love for each other, love for family, and love for their town. A burning love. A selfless love. An avenging love. They don't even hesitate to charge into the dark, dirty sewer for the ones they love.

As long as they stick together, the monster is far less likely to hurt them. Will they stick together? Will they be strong enough to defeat the monster? Or will they have to return for a second battle? Only time will tell.

"Let's not think about 'we' and 'they.' Let's think about 'us'!"]

In this anti-fascist film produced by US Military in the wake of WWII, the producers deconstruct the politically motivated social engineering of Germany by the Nazi regime.

Its argument is just as timely today. A high schooler said, "This needs to be mandatory viewing in High School if only to get the general idea across.?"

The Dark Tower  is a phenomenal adaptation of Steven King's book series. Naturally, it is impossible to fit seven books worth of material into a 95 minute film, but the film does a fantastic job of standing alone. It tells the story of a neglected boy's discovery of a world beyond his. In spite of its hopeless condition, he finds the understanding and validation of which he is deprived at home.

Jacob is a gifted child, a haunted child, and a severely misunderstood child. His prolific dreams are a remarkable gift, which have the potential to do great things and save lives. However, he suffers, because his loved ones refuse to support him. Not his mother, not his step-father, not his therapist, and not his neighbor.

In a desperate attempt to escape a danger no one else can perceive, he embarks on a journey that leads to a world stricken with destruction. It is a world he can help with his gifts. Roland, the gunslinger he encounters, not only gives him support, but also protection and understanding. The common experience of losing their fathers bind them. Only together can they save both of their world from demons that lurk beyond.

The Mummy is the first official installment of the Dark Universe, cinema's latest franchise. Instead of comic book superheroes, the Dark Universe unites the world of classic monsters. One of the most infamous of these classic monsters is The Mummy.

Only, the new, improved mummy is a woman. A gorgeous and incredibly evil woman who gives meaning to Fatal Attraction . This is a classic monster with a modern touch with a very unique story. I can't imagine a better introduction to the Dark Universe.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets  is a fantastic film that centers around a singular and powerful theme: UNITY. Alpha, the City of a Thousand Planets, is a haven in space for all manner of species to unite. They live in peace, they work together, and they share technology and knowledge. It brings hope throughout the universe.

Unfortunately, one world slips through the cracks. These beings call Pearls live very simple lives, but they live in profound peace and unity. They are void of violence and war. They devote themselves to their work by harvesting a source of maximum energy. These energy pearls would be an invaluable resource to share with the universe.

What better franchise than Planet of the Apes to illustrate the consequences of such pride?

Everything that goes wrong in this world is due to human pride. Experimentation on the apes make the intelligent. A virus they create reduce the human race to a small population of infected mutes. Even worse, the few who avoid infection become unreasonable savages. Human pride ends the human race.

War for the Planet of the Apes is the thrilling conclusion to this franchise where the final battle between humans and apes ensue, and the ruling race is crowned. It is not a battle over land. It is not a battle over rights. It isn't even a battle over a title. Instead, the film depicts a battle over something far more precious.

Wonder Woman  is thus far the most exciting and influential film in the DC Comic franchise. Diana makes her first appearance in Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice. However, she remains a complete mystery throughout. The only information revealed is that she is much older than she looks and that she's "killed things from other worlds before."

Wonder Woman  explains that mysterious statement by taking us back in time to this intriguing battle. The thing from another world is no alien. Instead, she battles a deity, both ancient and evil. A deity that incite war and devastation upon the human race. A deity that Diana feels a calling to destroy in order to save humanity.

Life  is a thrilling and suspenseful story about the dangerous potential of alien life. Such a discovery is both exciting and dangerous. Thus, it should be handled with absolute caution, because there is simply no way of knowing the extent of its abilities. The most basic job of the ISS is to take every measure to protect Earth from this alien.

The ISS is a symbol of international peace on Earth. Each member of the crew hails from a different part of the world. Each of them plays an important role on the ship. Each contributes to the overall welfare of the ship. Only if they band together can they protect Earth from the hostile alien. They must communicate. They must work together. They must ALL agree upon a strategy. They must be willing to sacrifice everything, including themselves, to protect humanity.

"WE ARE ALL APART OF THOSE WHO CAME BEFORE" --COCO

Imagine at a time of mass deportation of Mexican immigrants and building a wall at the Mexico border to make a major movie feature with an entire Spanish cast and set in Mexico! This is what Pixar, yes Pixar, has done.

This is astonishing news totally caught me off guard.

I am excited. Because the Bible teaches, "From one man he made all the nations (Acts 17:26a)." And that we are all children of the same ancient mother (Eve -Genesis 3:2). En otras palaberis, we are all cousins and part of the same family. No wonder the Bible teaches us to "love one another."

Pixar's new animated feature COCO celebrates this truth. In a time of adversity, xenophobia and blatant racism isn't it wonderful this this film should be made? Pixar has trully done a Jesus-thing!

Beauty and the Beast is a remarkable live action remake of animated 1991 Disney classic. However, this is no simple remake. Rather, it is an upgrade, because it gives the story a deeper level of meaning and fills in many plot holes of the original.

One such patch occurs with the surprising twist ending regarding Agatha, the village's homeless woman. Where most people in the village pass her by without a second though, she turns out to be the key to saving both the castle and the village. She is the glue holding the two locations together.

Sing   is a story of a theater owner named Buster Moon and his final desperate attempt to save his dream from financial ruin with a cliche singing competition. He fails to pay his staff, he cannot pay his bills, and the bank is days away from repossessing the building. Worst of all, he guarantees a grand prize of $100,000, a prize he cannot even close to pay. Could the ticket sales be remotely enough to cover all he owes? Not even close.

The only justification he has for his irresponsible behavior is purely emotion. His father worked hard to buy him the theater; therefore… he should be free to be creative in spite of rationale, logic, professionalism, or reality. Even as he faces the consequences of his terrible decisions, he continues to make terrible decisions. He lives in an unrealistic fantasy. He thinks one decent show will solve all of his problems, but reality says NO .

The pressure of these impossible expectations also negatively affect the passionate musicians involved. Each of them except a certain egotistical mouse audition due to their love for music. The power and beauty of music give their lives meaning. It gives their lives momentum. It gets them through their daily routines. Music is a piece of their core identity. Yet, it becomes clear that the pressure, expectations, and controlling behavior nearly crushes the musical spirit within them.

A professionally ambitious stork named Junior and a free spirited inventor named Tulip work for this thriving business, but they are without family and very lonely until an unintentionally manufactured “package” forces them to team up for an unexpected delivery. On their journey, they discover the value of teamwork, friendship, family, and most importantly redemption.

Sadly, every stork is stripped of their calling and given a delivery job, because management would rather hide a mistake than to remedy it. The audience sees and hears none of the hikers' experiences in the Black Hills Forest, a cursed patch of land that the witch's spirit supposedly haunts and the location of a disturbing number of terrifying legends .

No supernatural event occur on camera leaving footage filled with nothing but 81 minutes of three people walking, talking, and screaming. Many things could have happened off screen, including a fascinating theory that the two boys murder the girl themselves. The possibility of an evil witch is less likely.

The unbelievably entertaining remake of the iconic 1984 comedy premiered on July 15, 2016. It gives a modern look to a classic comedy. It must be no easy task to successfully improve upon such an iconic film, but it happily was by honoring the spirit of the story while providing its own flavor.

Hardcore Henry  is an action packed thrill ride with a fascinating twist. It certainly succeeds in its appearance of a video game. The entire film is shot from the point of view of Henry. He has no memories, and he cannot speak. His primary skill is fighting. The rescue of his wife is his only motivation.

However, Henry learns that not all is as it appears. Throughout his adventure, he makes friends, learns truths, and regains his memory. The lesson he learns in this memory completely overpowers the “love” for a wife of whom he has no memory. This single memory changes his motivation. The need to save his wife becomes a need to save the world.

"Nobody's normal. Nobody's healthy." (Mr. Right)

“Who… wants to be normal anyway?” (Mr. Right)

What even is normal? Who dictates the terms? Who has the right to judge?

These are questions the movie's star couple, Mr. Right and Martha, call into question. This is the world in which we live. Judgement and assumptions are everywhere. Francis and Martha take the brunt of this judgement throughout their story. They are labeled as weird , crazy , or out of control, because people refuse see beneath their surfaces.

Mr. Right is an assassin , a very skilled and fierce assassin. That is his reputation. Of course, he has more qualities than that. Like everyone else, he is a child of God. He is a victim of violence. He is a prisoner to his trade. He is also charismatic, friendly, entertaining, honest, and loyal. He yearns for love. He yearns for freedom. He years for acceptance.

The new Marvel film, Deadpool is so brilliantly written and acted that it wasted no time overreaching its young competitor, Star Wars: The Force Awakens . I haven’t laughed so hard in years. Every moment of those 108 minutes spends packed with irony, humor, action, romance and suspense. Eleven years of brainstorming shines through.

Jane Austen was, is, and will forever be a literary revelation. In the course of her life, she wrote six brilliant romance novels, the most popular of them being Pride and Prejudice . It is the story of family of a seven under the looming pressure of poverty and homelessness. The only hope Elizabeth Bennet and her four sisters have of avoiding that fate is to marry well. In fact, marriage is all Austen’s female characters seem to care about.

Who is REY?
By Cara Buckley 24 Dec, 2015

Every year for almost half my life, my family would gather around the television on Christmas Day to catch this film. One channel would play it back to back for the entire Christmas Day. It normally doesn’t feel like Christmas without it.

It is an enjoyable story set in the ’40s that follows Ralphie, a nine year old boy whose Christmas wish is a B.B. gun, the one toy he idolizes above everything else.

He asks his mother, his teacher, and Santa Clause at the mall. However, they all give him the same answer. “ You’ll shoot your eye out.”  His mother and teacher are too conscientious to condone it, and of course, Santa Clause is just a temp in a red suit. So, who would give him the gift he so desperately desires? The one person to whom he does not think to appeal. His father.

It begs the question. How close are the two? The film clarifies that Ralph lives in fear of him. Like any typical American family in the 40s, the father works and the mother cares for the house and children. It would make sense that Ralphie would feel closer to his mother when his father spends most of his free time with his nose in the newspaper or yelling obscenities at the furnace in the basement.

Then again, this film isn’t so much about a child’s pursuit for a toy as much as it is about a child developing relationship with members of his family. He feels closer to his father after receiving the gift he wants. He feels closer to his mother after she shows him compassion when he fights a classmate. The relationship he shares with his brother remains as complicated as can be expected, but even they have their moments.

A Christmas Story is one of the most iconic Christmas films ever made. It is an honest, wholesome take on the typical American family Christmas. Even though it is thirty-two years old (older than me) it remains alive on television and in the hearts of families all over the country.

Don’t miss the TBS 24 hour marathon on Christmas Day.

It has been thirty-five years since the end of Return of the Jedi . I waited most of my life for the next one, ever since I was introduced to the original trilogy in the 90’s. Despite everyone's insistence that Lucas was finished, I never believed it.

It would be foolish to give up on Star Wars, and the incredible response to The Force Awakens , even after all these years, suggests that Lucas made a mistake. A mistake that Disney insists on remedying.

Of course, having taken thirty-five years, it left the creators with two choices. They could decide to write a completely fresh story, free of the original characters: Luke, Leia, and Han. However, a Star Wars story without them would not feel like Star Wars at all.

The other option would be to include the characters, and explain the aging by setting it thirty years after Return of the Jedi . In doing so, the story was set up to repeat the format of A New Hope, the beginning of a new generation of Jedi.

It is the cause of many complaints among fans, but it was the only way.

The original characters serve as a transition for the new characters: Kylo Ren, Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron.

There are some complaints circulating that The Force Awakes  is a copy of A New Hope . I will not deny there are indeed several parallels between the two. However, it is important to acknowledge its own story.

The Force Awakens  is a story about two people who find their true place in the world. Both Finn and Rey begin by allowing the circumstances of their past to define them. The only way they rise their miserable existences begins through choice.

Finn begins as a storm trooper, one of many faceless, nameless soldiers trained to follow orders, including mass murder. However, he cannot bring himself to murder innocent people. He makes the choice not to pull his trigger. He makes the choice to break free from the First Order and set free the prisoner from the Resistance. Eventually, after he meets Rey, his first real friend, he chooses to save her life.

Rey begins as a homeless, orphaned scavenger surviving on table scraps. Her job is to trade scrap metal for food. However, she makes the choice to save a droid from another scavenger. She makes a choice to resist the temptation of trading it. She makes the choice to help it find its master and help Finn escape the First Order.

These choices not only bring them together, but also lead them down a path of extraordinary discovery. A path where they can be loved and invaluable. A path where they save countless lives. A path where they may vanquish evil. A path that leads the Resistance (and Leia) straight to the mysterious dwelling place of Luke Skywalker.

The Force Awakens  marks the beginning of a new era, a new diplomacy, and new generation of Jedi. However, the one thing that has not changed is the dire need for Luke Skywalker who is for a time the galaxy’s only Jedi, but hopefully not the last.

Whoever Rey is, whether is related to Luke, Han, Obi-Wan, or Kylo Ren, she bears the potential to be a Jedi Master for the Light Side. That journey will continue with Episode VIII that is due to premiere in 2017.

The Power of Purpose

By Cara Buckley 16 Oct, 2015

Goosebumps is a fantastical story with a brilliant mix of humor and horror where every monster from every Goosebumps book comes to life.

The film opens on a new kid in town. It becomes immediately evident that he struggles with the many changes in his life. The move from the great city of New York to a small town in Delaware is hard enough, but it’s even worse that his own mother works at his new school or that his new friend is the most awkward boy in school. However, all of these things pale in comparison to the recent death of his father.

Were you a kid in the 90s? Did you love your cartoons? Did you refuse to go a single night without tuning into Nickelodeon and Disney?

Rugrats. All That. CatDog. Kenan and Kel. Hey Arnold! , etc...

Who can forget Hey Arnold! ? The kind-hearted nine-year old boy with his unusual family, many friends, a love-sick stalker, and words of wisdom for any impossible situation. Even more memorable was the show's unjust cancellation before the story's pivotal conclusion.
