ASH WEDNESDAY

Matthew 4:1-2: “Then, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted there by the devil. For forty days and forty nights he fasted and became very hungry.”

Today begins the lent of 2011, which for the next forty days and nights people may fast or give away a personal vise for the chance to bring themselves closer to God in preparation for Easter.
I have celebrated lent every year since I can remember. It was a family tradition. However, it didn’t have much spiritual meaning for me. It was more of a personal challenge. How long could I go without the vise I gave up? I didn’t succed for very long. Now that I older, I have a better understanding of what lent really means.
What lent is really about is cleansing your life of sinful distractions and using that time and energy to devote to God. For those of you with no vises to sacrifice, it would be good to vow more devotional time every day. Every little thing counts. The important thing is to find a way to bring yourself closer to God. This isn’t a religious diet. Good luck, my friends.
