ENTICING HER UNEXPECTED BRIDEGROOM (2016) Book Review
Catherine Hemmerling is a far cry from your typical historical romance author. Once a technical writer, the idea of her first novel appeared to her in a dream. Thus, the brilliant historical romance series, the Lady Lancaster Garden Society, was born. It harbors many layers of story telling including mystery, romance, intrigue, adventure, and the struggle for the empowerment of women.
The Garden Society is a group led by the wise and empowering Lady Lancaster of young women who spend their free time solving mysteries, righting wrongs, and saving lives. Each novel follows one girl through her mystery, her family struggles, the devastatingly stressful expectations of society, and her personal relationship with her husband.
Enticing Her Unexpected Bridegroom is the story of Sarah Jardin, a tall, awkward, and clumsy lady plagued with insecurity, poor impulse control, and unrequited love for David Rochester. He is the brother of her best friend and fellow Garden Society member, Hannah. Sarah’s story (and relationship) begins with an embarrassing but innocent moment that turns into a misunderstanding.
David and Sarah are forced into a face-saving marriage. Since she loves the empathetic David, one would think such an event would be a dream come true. However, Sarah knows better. David resents her for their predicament. When duty calls, she must push her personal problems aside and focus on saving the life of a family.
What begins as a series of problems becomes a chance to kill two birds with one stone when David agrees to assist. Together, they embark on a mission where David finds the chance to deepen his understanding and respect for his unexpected bride. Is it enough to fall in love? Can they work together well enough to save a man’s life and eradicate a pointless law?
This book is a remarkable story of an unlikely couple working together for a greater good. It explores the true meaning of family, the importance of mutual respect in a marriage, and acceptance of flaw. This is so far my favorite book of the series, and I look forward to what Catherine Hemmerling has in store.
