O HOLY NIGHT
It has recently come to my attention that a disturbing majority of O Holy Night renditions omit the second verse. Many people are even blissfully unaware of its existence. This is unacceptable.
I was raised among a rare group of people that embraced all three verses. Of course, my childhood church sang directly from a hymnal, and my high school music teacher was an all or nothing lady. She would never dream of cutting verses out of any of our songs, so I wonder why it is so acceptable for everyone else?
Yes, I am fully aware of the historical inaccuracy in verse 2: The wise men did not visit on the night of Christ's birth. They visited while the family was hiding out in Egypt. WE ALL KNOW. So, what? It's a beautiful verse to a beautiful song. It captures the spirit of the story. O Holy Night is Christmas treasure, and it should be treated as such.
In light of the disturbing revelation, I immediately scoured YouTube searching for the complete hymn and found ONE video. God bless you, Samuel Ramsey, for keeping the complete hymn alive, even when nobody else will. Please, take a moment to listen to a complete O Holy Night. Educate yourself. Enjoy.
