THE MUMMY (2017) Movie Review

Romans 5:12 says, "When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned." -NLT

The Mummy is the first official installment of the Dark Universe, cinema's latest franchise. Instead of comic book superheroes, the Dark Universe unites the world of classic monsters. One of the most infamous of these classic monsters is The Mummy.

Only, the new, improved mummy is a woman. A gorgeous and incredibly evil woman who gives meaning to Fatal Attraction. This is a classic monster with a modern touch with a very unique story. I can't imagine a better introduction to the Dark Universe.

Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella) is an ancient Egyptian princess whose desperate ambition for power wipes her from her royal status and history itself. She is deemed a fearsome evil after the brutal murder of her entire family and her failed attempt to bring Set, the God of Death, into the world. Her drive for power becomes insatiable.

In Luke 9:25, Christ asks "And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but are yourself lost or destroyed?" -NLT

Indeed. Her blind ambition leads her down a very destructive path. She incurs the worst punishment possible in ancient Egypt. She is mummified alive and buried in a pool of mercury nearly a thousand miles outside of Egypt. However, her association with evil is so strong that she is not defeated. She is merely subdued.

After her inevitable awakening, she picks up where she left off. Several people make several attempts to subdue, but they fail. Her evil becomes too strong. Only one thing defeats her, the thing of which she is not capable.

LOVE. Sacrificial love.

The method of this sacrifice is unorthodox, but the sacrifice is clear. This sacrifice is at great cost, inflicts great suffering, and from love to save another. As the Dark Universe progresses, the story of Set and Ahmanet will continue. I am eager to see the conclusion of their ultimate defeat.

Romans 6:23 says, "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord." -NLT

In the meantime, let us take this lesson from this incredible film. There is no way for humanity to subdue evil on its own. Not a pit of mercury. Not any amount of relics. Not even the grave of God's infamous warriors. Only through the blood of Christ can we be free from evil. Only through God's salvation are we saved. Look not to anyone but God.
