RIVER RAMPAGE (2012) Book Review

I must say how impressed I am at how much Max Elliot Anderson has developed as a children’s adventure author. His latest creation is River Rampage, the third in the Sam Cooper Adventure series. As if Sam Cooper hasn’t gotten into enough trouble, his parents allow him to go river rafting on the . Despite how dangerous he knows it can be and despite the bad feelings he gets before departing, he caves into pressure anyway. If they hadn’t gone, they wouldn’t have gotten stranded on a river bank.
Life can be just as unpredictable and dangerous as a raging river. There’s no telling where it may take you. No one can see your destination but God. He alone is in control of your destiny just as He was in control of the journey of Sam and his friends. At first, they were scared and alone. However, they followed their instincts and discovered that they weren’t the ones who needed rescue. They were sent to save a man’s life.
Another fascinating point I took from the book is how amazingly we adjust and re-prioritize in time of crisis. The boys had limited resources and no one to look after them after they broke from the group. Yet, they remained calm and did all the necessary tasks to get rescued. Later on the river, they looked to their number one priority: God’s salvation. Despite the danger around them, Sam takes the time to minister to the old man they save.
We should all examine the amount of time we take to discuss our faith with the people around us. An eleven year old boy can do it to a man he hardly knows. It is not that difficult a task, and it’s what followers of Christ are called to do first and foremost.
