Do Not Be Afraid.
Proverbs 18:24: “There are ‘friends’ who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother.” (NLT)
Max Elliot Anderson’s latest novel, The Scarecrow , is a perfect children’s story to add to your shelf in the wake of Halloween. Billy is a lonely child who secretly harbors a fear of scarecrows. Yet, he lives under the comfort that he would never meet one in the city. That is until his mother starts a fire and loses him to his aunt and uncle who take him to their farm. There, he meets the Scarecrow.
However, his loneliness overpowers his fear. Being the only child on a secluded farm can be tough on any young boy. So, instead of avoiding the scarecrow, he reaches out to the scarecrow. It becomes his imaginary friend.
During their struggle to adapt Billy to farm life, Uncle Jim and Aunt Ruth recognize Billy’s unusual behavior right away. As Christians they approach him with love and extreme patience. They understand that Billy has been through many trials in his young life, including abuse from his mother. They know that stern lectures would push him away even further. So, Uncle Jim embraces the problem as an opportunity to introduce Billy to Christ.
Billy learns that Christ is his ultimate friend. It doesn’t matter where he goes, what he does, or who taking care of him. As long as Christ is in Billy’s heart, Christ is always with him and he will never be lonely again. This book illustrates that Christ never leaves his children. As long as He dwells within our hearts, He never leaves us or forsakes us as it says in the Bible.

Deuteronomy 31:6: “So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.” (NLT)
